Da Vinci® Robotic Surgery

Da Vinci Robot

As technology advances, new techniques are available in the medical world to help reduce the complexity and invasive nature of many surgical procedures. Laparoscopy offers less invasive procedures by using a thin tube with a camera that lets surgeons see the treated area. But laparoscopy is limited by rigid and restricted movements.

While laparoscopy offers many advantages over traditional open surgery, robotic surgery takes technology one step further. The da Vinci Surgical System utilizes the latest advances in medicine to allow for precise and effective results for a wide range of procedures. The da Vinci system is especially beneficial for patients whose surgery is elective, and who may be more willing to undergo the procedure with fewer side effects and risks.

Surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System is performed through several tiny incisions rather than one large incision. The robotic arms of the system's console carry surgical instruments and a camera to the targeted area and perform the procedure under the complete control of the surgeon. The robotic arms utilize EndoWrist technology, which precisely mimics the movements of the surgeon's arms for matched dexterity and extreme control.

Your surgeon is able to view the targeted area through the Vision System, an imaging system that provides a magnified, three-dimensional view of the entire operative field. This provides a clearer and more detailed view than traditional open surgery. With this combined technology, many surgeons find that robotic surgery offers more control and accuracy than conventional techniques.

For example, cardiothoracic procedures are traditionally very risky and involve a large incision in the chest and cutting open the breastbone. The da Vinci system allows for tiny incisions to be made on the side of the chest in between the ribs. Instead of undergoing major surgery, patients can experience a minimally invasive procedure with the same results.

These features provide many advantages to patients, including:

  • Less pain
  • Less scarring
  • Less bleeding
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Lower risk of infection

While the da Vinci Surgical System offers patients many benefits over traditional surgery, it is not for everybody. It is important to discuss the risks of surgery with your doctor, who will help you determine whether or not robotic surgery is right for you.
